The Best trip to Action World

Te Maunga and Te Ngahere went to Action World. We all had to walk to Action World and some people didn’t want to walk. I wanted to walk because it is great exercise. We got there at around 10 o’clock and we were all excited. First we had to eat then we could go play. We all went around, trying different activities. Some people also went down the waterside and some of us went to play mini golf. Eventually, we had to go. Some of us didn’t want to go including me, but we did have a good time. What I enjoyed was having fun at Action World and being kind to others, and myself. My favourite activity was the rock climb because it would test your fear of heights. Also I didn’t want to jump down because I was too high. Thanks teachers for taking us to Action World. Here are some photos.

Awasome Chuck Close Art

Kia ora bloggers. In Te Ngahere we have been doing Chuck close art. This art was really fun and interesting. First we got a square that had smaller squares and some of the smaller squares were gray and some were white. In the white squares you had to color it in with a light color and in the gray squares you had to do them dark colors. After you had colored in your squares you then put a pattern over each square. After that we joined all the finished art together and it created a person. The people we made were Harry Potter and Batman. Do you like doing art?

Amazing athletics

Last week Paihia School went to Bledisloe Domain to participate in the inter school athletics day. We were learning to develop more complex movement sequences and strategies in a range of situations.Once everybody had arrived there was so many people. There were lots of groups that had been sorted into year and gender. So the Year 6 girls and the Year 6 boys would be separated. First we started off at the 200 and 400 meters sprints. My friend Angela came first in the 200 meter sprints and second in the 400 meter sprints. Then we went to shot put but we had to be fast because the last group took up alot of our time. After we went to my favourite activity long jump. There was three popsicle sticks in the sand for first, second and third. Me and Angela were coming first and second but a girl from another school beat us. Next time we go I’m going to try and come in first, second or third in Long Jump. Do you like doing athletic? Bye

Illusional art

Last week in Te Ngahere we started doing some art. We were learning how to make an optical illusion. First we had to draw 6 intersecting lines. After we did that we had to draw curves going up on every second triangle. Then in the triangles that hadn’t been filled in we drew curves going down. After we did that we had to carefully go over it with vivid. Next we picked 2 colors and colored every second line in the up curves with 1 color. Then we did the same but with the down curves and a different color. Next we did that we had to do shading of the same color where we didn’t colored in. What I could do better is try harder and don’t rush because my art didn’t turn out as well as I think it would just to be ahead. Have you ever made any type of illusional art before? Here is mine

2019 Film Festival

Last week on Wednesday a couple of year 5 and 6 students including me had an opportunity to go to the Kawakawa film festival. We all gathered up after tuakana hui and we walked down to the bus. We went to the Kawakawa Primary School hall. There were two girls who went to Kawakawa School who explained what was happening and a little bit about the film festival. We got told that the film festival was going to be at least one hour long but it went by fast. The first film was one of Paihia Schools films in Te Maunga. A couple of films later there was another film from Paihia School called Life About Nerds. After we watched it most of us were saying they saved the best for last because it was the best. The last film was Boy and it was really funny. The film festival wasn’t really long. I wish I went back to the six o,clock one because I really wanted to watch the remake of boy again. We had another movie night at Paihia School on the last day without the year seven and eights. If you want to know about that stay on my blog or come onto it daily. Did you go to the film festival and what was your favourite film?

Amazing Tessellations

This week Te Ngahere have been doing tessellations, tessellation is a shape that can make a pattern without overlapping or leaving any gaps. We did this so we could learn about the math terms, these are the math terms: tessellation, translate, rotation, symmetry and reflection. I have made a DLO to help you make your own tessellations. Next time we do this I think that I could do an even better shape. Have you made a tessellation before?

Facts About Different Foods Groups

On Monday, Gina from energize came in to make sure that we are put the correct type of food in our body. She first told us what food groups there are and why they are good for us. The different types of food groups are Milk and Milk products, Vegetables and fruits, Meat and Meat alternatives Grain and Grain Food. Milk and Milk products is mostly dairy but people that are lactose intolerant can have soy milk, coconut milk, Almond milk, Rice milk and Oat milk. Gina said that for lunch you should have at least two of the food groups in your lunch box. Do you have two food groups in your lunch box?

Duffy Theater

On Friday the Duffy theater came to our school. We haven’t had a duffy show before we usually only get a person that talks about books and what they are good for. This show was meant for the year 1 up to the year 6’s but the year 7 and 8’s came anyway. The plot of the story was a girl wouldn’t hop off her game and her cousin wanted to play but they both got stuck in the game, so they had to work together to get out. I think the moral of the story is to not get distracted by playing on the internet. What I found funny was how they were acting over the top.

Ki - o - rahi

This week at Paihia School kids have being training for Ki o rahi. I like doing Ki o rahi because it is fun and easy way to do fitness. Last week we attended a tournament in Morewa. We played different schools around our community. Our coaches make a real difference to how we play. They have being giving up there time to coach us. I’m happy that they do this because it gives us time to learn new skills. What I did well is that I learnt how to play the game again. What I could do better is try to use my skills and calm down before throwing the ball. What is a way that you calm down fast?

Incredible PE

At Paihia School Te Maunga and Te Ngahere have been doing athletics. We were doing this because athletics day is coming up this term. We were learning to develop more complex movement sequences and strategies in a range of situations and demonstrate consistency and control of movement in a range of situations. There were five groups and five activities High jump, long jump, sprints, shot put and discus. My favourite activity was the sprints and relays because I really enjoy running. The hardest one for me was shot put because I found it hard getting the throw correct. So far I have learnt how to expand my legs to reach a further mark in long jump. I can’t wait for athletics day.

Awesome Movie Making

For the past few weeks in Te Ngahere we have been making movies. A few weeks ago me and my group started making a script. We first learnt about what camera angles are and how to position them. I like doing this because it lets me experience different ways to film and act. The reason we did this was because we have the Kawakawa Film Festival coming up. Two class’s in our school will send some people to go. Me and my group had our ups and downs but we manage to finish filming or script. Our film is about two girls going camping but fall out of there boat and meet a ghost. What I could do better next time is that I could work faster and not get distracted by other people around me. Blog you later

Thrilling Math

This week in Te Ngahere we have been learning a new way to help us with our maths. We got into groups of four and we were given sixteen cards and we had to share out the cards evenly amongst ourselves. These are the rules we had to follow no talking, no non- verbal signals and no taking anyone else’s cards. On the cards that we had were numbers, dots, tiles, words and shapes. For an example if you have a triangle, a piece of paper with three dots, the number three and a piece of paper with three tiles shaded in you will have a match and you are done.We were learning to identify different patterns and work together to help solve each others problems. I really enjoyed doing this maths because it is a lot of fun but the thing I didn’t enjoy was that it was really hard because we couldn’t talk to each other or communicate. Have you learnt any new maths this term?

Terrific Tips On How To Stay Safe On A Boat

Terrific Tips On How To Stay Safe On A Boat This week in Te Ngahere we got a visit form a lady called Tracy. We learnt about how to be safe in the summer time around water. These were the five things that she told us about when being safe on a boat , one check the weather, two Wear life jackets, three tell someone, four put your safety first and five have a waterproof phone or radio. From what i've learnt I will make sure that I talk to my family about buying flares because that was the only thing that we don’t have on our boat. What was interesting to me was flares and all the different types of them. Are you boat safe?

Our 99 cm freestanding newspaper tower

In Te Ngahere for the first day back at school we did a STEAM challenge. We were learning to make a free standing object with limited materials. For this STEAM challenge we were only allowed to use 2 sheets of newspaper and 30 cm of tape. What made it even harder was that we only had 20 minutes to create our tower. At the end of the 20 minutes, the teacher measured all the towers and ours came out to be 99cm. In the process of measuring we learnt that the wider the base is the more stable it will be.The winning group was Zhynaliyah and Emma's tower that reached 1.18 meters. What worked well was when we first made our structure, it wasn’t as balanced as we hoped so we put a little more tape on the base of the tower to make it stable. One thing that we found hard was having to move our tower from one place to another without causing any damage to it. Have you done a STEAM challenge before?

Kaikohe culture festive dress rehearsal

Kia ora bloggers, as some of you may know on Tuesday the 17th of September the Paihia School kapa haka roopu went to the Kaikohe Memorial Hall, for the culture festive dress rehearsal. The dress rehearsal was so we know when it was our time to perform, how we were going to perform, how big the the stage was and where to go for the day that we will be performing on ( Thursday the 19th of September). When we go on Thursday I think that I could do more facials.

Reusing & Attributing Images

In Te Ngahere we have been Reusing & Attributing Images, we have been learning to use the right images for our work. Today I will be teaching you how to check if you can or cannot use an image off the web. First start off by choosing an image, at the bottom of the screen it should say Image is labeled for commercial use with modification that means you are allowed to use it. If it doesn't that means you can not. Once you have done that photo always has a link, that link has lot of information such as the name of the photo, who took the photo and who the file is licenced under. All of those thing are all important. We made a DLO to show you hope you like it.

Te reo moari

In Te Ngahere we have been learning how to say classroom objects in maori. We have practiced saying them for a couple of days and we played wharewhare (bingo) to help. We also created short animations to help us. My buddy was Franky. We had to say “He aha tenei,” while holding an item in your hand, He aha tenei means what is this. Then the second person will point at the object and say “He _____ Tena”, He ____Tena means That is a______ something. We had to make 10 or more examples of different items and then screencastify it. What I could do better next time is when I have to reply to make sure I say tena and not teni. I really enjoyed making the animation because we all just found out how to take away the background. Here is my animation hope you like it.

Cross country

On Friday we had our school cross country day at the Bledisloe domain. We were all excited to run. We left the school a round 11:15 and got set into our transport cars. Sadly I had a cold so I wasn’t able to run, but my teacher Whea Beck’s asked me to be the photographer. The race started off from the 5 year old boys to the 5 year old girls and all the way up to the 13 year old girls. If you came 1st 2nd or 3rd you got to go to the inter school cross country that has been held in Waikare. It was so fun watching everyone cross the finish line but I wanted to get in there and have ago.

Takeaway foods with Gina

In Te Ngahere we have been learning about healthy and unhealthy fat foods that can affect your heart. Today Gina from energize came into our school, she told us that this week was about our hearts. Did you know if you clinch one of your fists that is the size of your heart. She brought in some cards to show us, we had to sort them out into 2 columns. The two columns were called least amount of fat and most amount of fat. Once we were finished, we got to look at the cards so we could be tested. We got split up into groups and had to sort the cards out into the right column. When we were finished we had to put our hands on our head and say finish. It was a very close game but my group won. Blog you later.

Science Fair Project

In Te Ngahere we have been learning about the scientific method. Last week we presented our experiments. We got to choose if we wanted to be in a group or by ourself. In my group we had 4 people their names are Breeze, Mihipeka and Vanya. Our experiment was What pen brand will last the longest. The brands that we used were Office max, Homebrand, Bic and Papermate. Once we had finished testing we found out that the Office max pen had the most ink in it because it ran 695 meters. Last Friday we lucky enough to have Mrs Lindsay our Principal and Danielle Archer who is a Marine biologist judge our boards. Later on in the day we found out who came 1st 2nd and 3rd. My group came 2nd. It felt really cool coming 2nd.

Author Katarina Lee

At Paihia School we were fortunate to have an author named Katarina Lee come talk to us about the 2 book that she has published (Series: Lost in time). Katarina has a big fluffy octopus named Omri. Omri is Katarina's tour buddy. She sang two songs to us, each time Katarina sang, 2 people got to go up and make a beat with the instruments that she brang. At the end Mrs Pou went up and danced. About 10 other kids also went up with her. They danced to one of Katarina's family’s song. Katarina’s family is a family band. Next time I think that I could learn more about her so I can ask some questions.

NED SHOW

On Thursday we were very fortunate to have a lady named Nicole and her friend Ned come into Paihia School to talk to us about our mindsets. Ned traveled ‘around the world’ because he was on a mission to find his. An important message that Nicole told us was to Let go of the words “I Know” so you can learn and grow and you can do it with the power of yet, for example, if you kept on saying “I know” you will get a freeze brain (when your brain becomes frozen and doesn’t have the right mindset to learn more ) but when you say I don’t know it yet your brain gets a go brain (when your brain is taking in knowledge and is learning more) . Ned’s name stands for Never give up, Encourage others and Do your best. I really enjoyed the yoyo trick that Nicole showed us. After the show we made a D.L.O explaining NED, Here is mine.

Paper Rockets

In Te Ngahere we have been learning about the scientific method. We first watched a video of how to make paper rockets. Our teachers found some worksheets for us to fill out. We also have been learning about the meaning of a hypothesis. If you don't know what a hypothesis is it is something that you guess from research. My buddy and I found out that the reason a rocket has fins is to do with stability. The fins help the rocket keep pointing in the same direction that it was launched . Once were finished we got to make the paper rocket off the video. We each got ten blows we collect data on a spreadsheet.

Cross country training

In Te Ngahere we have been learning to pace ourselves in running. We have been running around the school to get fit for our school cross country day. Last week we ran 2 laps but this week we will be running 3 laps. Each time we run we get timed. The first time we ran I took 7 minutes and 9 seconds. Now my time is down to 6 minutes and 13 seconds. Before and after we run we always stretch. To keep track of how long we took we write it down in our books. Once it has been a whole week we put all of our times on a spreadsheet and turn it into a chart. The chart shows us If we have gone faster or slower.

Coding

In Te Ngahere we have been coding. We were learning about the angles in geometry. Mr lindsey talked to us about the shapes. He showed use what a hexagonal cube looked like. This helped us with the different angles in geometry. I was able to make a hexagonal cube. I enjoyed trying to use the least amount of blocks. I ended up using 12 blocks. Next time we code I think that I could try make a hexagonal cube with less than 10 blocks. If you would like to make shapes of your own head to code.org Here is my creation.

Cultural Festival Day

Last Friday the Kapa Haka roopu attended the Southern Bay of Islands Cultural Festival. We were learning to use facials throughout the performance. Before we left we warmed up our vocal cords. When we got there we waited for Kawakawa Primary to powhiri us on. I loved watching all of the performances. After Maramaku it was our turn. We all waited outside for Maramaku’s roopu to walk off stage. We all walked on line by line, as we stepped on stage we performed 8 items. We were all so proud of ourselves when we finished. Next time we go I think that I could push myself even harder.

Cultural festival.

At Paihia school we have a kapa haka roopu that goes to represent the school. This week we have been invited to the Bay of Islands cultural festival. Every afternoon we go across to our whare to practice.  This week our kapa haka tutors have been putting all of their time into us. I like learning all of the new waiata. I’m am super excited for Friday.

Marble Challenge

In Te Ngahere we have been learning how to design a ramp with different materials around the class. We all had to make our ramp the best of our ability. When we had finished we wrote our names on a google doc for our teachers to print out. We had to write some instruction to give to another group. Whaea Beck’s (our teacher) ruled out measurements on a paper where the marble needed to stop. Whaea Chrissy was marking the scores. When we were testing I learnt that every time you roll you have to roll it with the same hand and the same way so you get the same results every time.

My pepeha

In Te Ngahere we have been learning our pepeha. For people that don’t know what a pepeha is, it is a story that tells us where your from, where you came from and who your family is. I enjoy learning my pepeha because it is a whole new language ( Te reo Maori ) we get to learn. When we practise again I think I should include more of my family.

 HERE IS MY PEPEHA:
 Ko Pouerua toku maunga
Ko Waitangi toku awa
Ko Ngapuhi toku iwi
Ko Nga te hine toku hapu
Ko Paihia toku Kura

Magic show

On Wednesday a fabulous magician came to Paihia School. The show even had a name, it’s name was Be bright Eat Right the magic show. The magician name was Vas. It was 9:30 and the class’s couldn't even wait till the show even started . We were learning to eat the right sorts of foods. I really enjoyed when he would give us frights. I think I did well when my friend and I said thank you to him and said “ that we appreciated what you showed us .“ I think that the next time he comes we could ask more interesting questions. He pulled out some different types of food so he could ask us if it either goes in fruit, vegetable, Dairy, Protein or grains. Another trick that he did was turned a piece of material that had a bird on it into a dove ( bird). He also made 2 cute bunnies come out and even three more doves. I hope that he comes back to our school.

Rebecca

In Te Maunga we have been learning about Rebecca Brothers. Rebecca is an Olympic Ambassada. We went into peers and made a google drawing of appropriate question to ask, because on Tuesday 16th of October she would be coming to our school. The day she came everyone was excited. When she came she told us about her Journey. She told us what her day would be when she was 9 years old, she would wake up at 4:00 o’clock in the morning and get ready and go down to her swimming club for 2 hours and then she would go home and get ready for school and at 3:00 she would come home and do her homework and get ready to go back to the club. I learnt it doesn't matter what size you are.

Kupe, Nukutawhiti, James Cook and Abel Tasman’s Journeys

In Te Ngahere we have been learning about Kupe, Nukutawhiti, James Cook and Abel Tasman’s Journeys. We have been researching about them to find out their impact on New Zealand. After we had found out our information we had to choose someone to write about. I really enjoyed finding out the things that Kupe Nukutawhiti, James Cook and Abel Tasman did for New Zealand and the history behind their stories. Next time I think that I should find out more related facts about the topic .

ANZAC biscuits

In Te Ngahere we have been doing maths about Anzac biscuits. Each group got a A3 piece of paper with the questions on it. I enjoyed figuring ways to get the answer. Next time we do this sort I think i can do more sterges to work it out. This is the DLO I made to show you.

Coding Speoro

At Paihia School we have robots. We have been learning to code them. I enjoyed coding the robots at different speeds. I think I did well getting my robot aiming at myself so it will roll forward. Other people even had to go from one piece of paper to another. It was very fun to do but still very hard. The hardest things to do was getting it to turn the right amount of degrees.

Doubling and halving DLO

In Te Ngahere we have been learning to double and halving ( multiplication ) in maths. I think I did well because I was able to answer it the first time and not have to rub it out and try it again. I enjoyed the word problem because it set a harder equation for me. One of them ( word problem ) was 4222 x 5 = 21110. I think the next time we do this that I will be able to finish one whole sheet of math in one day so the next day I can do the next sheet.

Learning Our Identity

On Monday the 18th of February Whaea Monika and Whea Kerry came to our school to finish our work on our identity. We were learning about our identity. I enjoyed making a tree that had weird shapes on the end and that were laying on the ground. The next time we go I think I could do more work on it. We all got ask what we learnt while we were at the Treaty grounds and how we treat the technology. We need to put a Ngahere ( bush) in our virtual world to show were we were going to g0. Whaea Monika gave some examples of how we can make a Norfolk pine. My group inserted a cylinder and a cone to make some of our trees. We had trees that were tipped over, on angle’s, tall one’s and short. We all had to work together to make this amazing project.

Trip to waitangi

On the 8th and 9th of February the year 6’s went to the Waitangi Treaty grounds for the day. We then met the people that were going to be teaching us, their names were Whaea Monika and Whaea Kerry. We learnt how to use lots of different technology. We learnt how to use apps such as Sculpt GL, Paint 3D, Tinkercad, Stop motion, Green screen, VR and Dash robots. I enjoyed using Dash Bot because you can get it to dance and do a variety of different things. I think that the next time we go that I could be more creative. We split up into 4 groups to go for a walk around the treaty grounds. We saw a trumpet in the museum which Abel Tasman would blow, the maori chiefs thought he wanted to fight so one of the maori chiefs would blow the the Putatara declaring war against the Pakeha. Some of the people that go on the waka blow the Putatara on Waitangi day. There is armour in the museum that dates back to 1840 and there are also letters that the maori would send to the Queen (Queen Victoria). In the museum we saw a big green stone which I found very fascinating. The next day we went into the lab and had a talk about our identity, who we are, where we came from and how we came here. Together as a class we had to brainstorm ideas on how we were going to use the apps to help us best describe identity. My time at the museum has been interesting and I have learnt so many new things and can't wait to go back and learn more amazing facts.
