Our 99 cm freestanding newspaper tower

In Te Ngahere for the first day back at school we did a STEAM challenge. We were learning to make a free standing object with limited materials. For this STEAM challenge we were only allowed to use 2 sheets of newspaper and 30 cm of tape. What made it even harder was that we only had 20 minutes to create our tower. At the end of the 20 minutes, the teacher measured all the towers and ours came out to be 99cm. In the process of measuring we learnt that the wider the base is the more stable it will be.The winning group was Zhynaliyah and Emma's tower that reached 1.18 meters. What worked well was when we first made our structure, it wasn’t as balanced as we hoped so we put a little more tape on the base of the tower to make it stable. One thing that we found hard was having to move our tower from one place to another without causing any damage to it. Have you done a STEAM challenge before?

  1. Hi Nicky. It’s Taleisha from Te Ngahere. I was just reading your most recent blog post about your 99cm free standing newspaper tower. That STEAM challenge looks quite complex. I hope you guys enjoyed doing this challenge (I wasn’t here). What did you enjoy doing most? Did your finished product turn out what you wanted it to be like? Keep up the great work Nicky!
